Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a nationally recognised training programme for young people. Apprenticeships have been designed by businesses in the relevant sector. This means that the training is relevant and tailored to meet the needs of the sector, by people who understand what is required.
There are currently two levels of Apprenticeship:
Apprenticeships: Apprentices work towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 2, key skills and in most cases a relevant technical certificate.
Advanced Apprenticeships: Advanced Apprentices work towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 3, key skills and in most cases a relevant technical certificate.
Both Apprenticeship frameworks are achieved through a combination of learning at college and assessments in the workplace.

Benefits to Learners
- An Apprenticeship allows you to learn, work, earn and get qualified all at the same time
- You will have access to continued professional development leading to further opportunities in the trade
- You will qualify to a high standard that is nationally recognised
- You will have opportunities to progress onto Higher Education, for example a Higher National Certificate (HNC)
How long does an Apprenticeship take?
There is no set time limit, as Apprenticeship frameworks vary widely in content and size. The time taken to complete the Apprenticeship will also be dependant on your ability and the needs of your employer.
Where does the training take place?
Training takes place primarily in the workplace where the NVQ will be delivered, and also at college once a week, where the technical certificates and key skills are delivered.
What support will I have?
You will have a dedicated Apprentice Support Officer from the college, who will visit you regularly at work and review your progress.
How do I apply?
To become an apprentice you must be employed in the occupational area you have chosen. If you are not employed then you may apply for a full time course whilst you continue to seek employment. The application form for potential apprentices who are in employment can be accessed below:
If we feel you are potentially suitable for an apprenticeship programme you will be invited to come to the college for an assessment and interview. Here we will discuss the Apprenticeship in more detail and whether it is right for you.
