Health and Safety

You have a responsibility for you own safety and that of others within the College. It is important that you read, understand & apply all health & safety rules.safety

Your Health & Safety Responsibilities
  • You should observe all College health & safety rules & instructions.
  • You should observe the College's no smoking rules at all times.
  • You should behave with respect and consideration for others at all times.
  • You should use any equipment, material or machinery and personal protective equipment as directed by lecturing staff.
  • You should report to reception anyone or anything with potential to endanger others.

You must never:

  • Interfere with any safety or other equipment.
  • Introduce equipment into the college without prior consent.
  • Do anything that may cause a hazard to you or others.
Emergency Evacuation
  • You should make sure that you know emergency evacuation procedure for the area you are studying in, including where to report to during an evacuation (muster point).
  • Your tutor will explain the process at the beginning of your course.
  • If you discover a fire you should sound the alarm immediately by breaking the glass of an alarm call point. These are located in numerous locations in each college centre.
  • When you hear a fire alarm you should leave the building immediately and not delay for any reason, e.g. saving work on the computer.
  • You should use the nearest safe exit route (not always the way you entered the building).
  • You should not use a lift under any circumstances.
  • You should go to the muster point and remain there until told to re-enter the building by the senior fire marshal or a Fire Officer. Please do not smoke whilst there.
  • You should make sure that your tutor checks your name against the register and let them know if any class mates are missing or other relevant information, i.e. location of fire or activated alarm point.
  • If you are a disabled student, you should evacuate the building where this is easy and possible. If you are unable to evacuate you should assemble at the nearest Disabled Refuge and await evacuation by the emergency services.
  • You should treat all evacuations as real.
Your Welfare
  • You will receive health & safety advice/instructions relevant to your course.
  • You should report any accident or injury occurring on college property to your tutor immediately.
  • Please let the College know of health and disability issues you might have (such as diabetes or asthma) so that we can support you. Make sure that the medical section on your enrolment form is completed. (This information will be treated in strictest confidence and kept in a secure and discreet file.)
  • If you have a disability, please let Student Services or your tutor know so that a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan can be prepared for you. This will help us in your evacuation should it be necessary.
  • We recommend that you register with a local doctor and dentist if you are not already registered. If you have just moved into the area then we can help you to do this.
  • If you need to talk about any confidential issues we have College Counsellors and a Welfare team.
  • Please make sure that we have up-to-date emergency contact details.
Electrical Equipment
  • You should not plug in any of your own portable electrical equipment (e.g. laptop, phone chargers, music players)into the College's electrical supply.
  • Should any such equipment be required specifically by the course you are taking, the use of such equipment must be approved by your tutor.
Smoking Policy
  • Smoking is a health hazard. Even if you do not smoke your health can be put at risk by others who do smoke. It is illegal to smoke in any college building.
  • You are not allowed to smoke anywhere outside except in areas specifically designated for smoking.
  • The Highfields Automotive & Engineering Training Centre is a smoking free site.
Substance Abuse
  • You should not bring into college or be under the influence of any substance of abuse whilst in the college.
  • Disciplinary action will be taken for any contravention of this policy.
